This post shows you what to wear to Japan.

Planning a trip to Japan and wondering what to wear? This post shows you 11 different Japan outfit ideas that either match the Japanese clothing style or are appropriate for Japan.
Then, at the end, I’ll share 5 things you should not wear to Japan to avoid getting glares.
What To Wear To Japan
1. Wide Leg Pants and Blouse

When I was in Japan last October, I saw so many girls wearing these super wide leg pants that almost look like a long skirt. If you want to blend in and dress like a Japanese girl, then this is a must-have item in your collection.
Pair these pants with a nice blouse or a simple t-shirt if you want something minimal.
2. Long Coat and Scarf

In the winter, it’s so necessary to wear something thick and warm in Japan. Something many Japanese girls wear is a long thick coat and also a chunky scarf.
3. Leather Jacket and Black Pants

In the fall, most of Japan isn’t too cold but can be a bit chilly during the mornings and evenings. In that case, you can wear a light jacket like a leather jacket. Then, pair it with a pair of black pants.

4. Crewneck Sweater and Black Pants

On one hand, Japanese style is very elegant, but on the other hand, some outfits are very streetwear inspired. Like this outfit – it’s has a very relaxed fit with a loose crewneck sweater and a loose pair of black pants.
5. Cardigan and White Long Skirt

Something I saw very often in Japan was girls wearing a long denim skirt that isn’t particularly flowy but also not too tight. This kind of skirt goes really well with a cardigan on the top.
6. Long Skirt and Sweater

Here’s another outfit idea with a long structured skirt. You can pair it with a loose sweater and some sneakers.
7. Red Flowy Skirt

Japanese girls love wearing extremely flowy dresses and flowy skirts so if you want to look Japanese, definitely take inspiration from this photo!
8. White Tee and Wide Leg Pants

Another wide leg pant outfit for Japan is a gray pair of pants with a loose white tee. Then, wear it with a pair of sneakers.
9. Cardigan and Jeans

Even though Japan has distinct fashion styles like loose clothing and long loose skirts, they still have a very modern sense of style. You really can’t go wrong with wearing a pair of jeans and a cardigan.
10. Wide Leg Pants and Sweater

We’re bringing in the wide-leg pants again and this time, we’re wearing a bright-colored sweater with it. Japan fashion involves a lot of neutral colors but it can’t hurt to add a bit of color once in a while, especially if that’s your style.
11. Cardigan and Satin Skirt

When I went to Japan during the fall season, I noticed at least 50% of girls wearing long skirts. So for this outfit, we’re going with another skirt outfit. This time, we’re wearing a satin skirt with a cardigan to keep warm.
What To NOT Wear To Japan
Let me preface this by saying there is no strict dress code in Japan! You are free to wear anything you’d like, but there are a few unspoken dress code rules that will help you look a little bit more like a local if you follow them.
- Avoid revealing clothing. This includes tank tops, very short mini skirts, spaghetti strap tops, etc.
- Hard to remove shoes. Often when a restaurant has a tatami mat, you’ll be asked to remove your shoes. So it’s best to wear shoes that aren’t too hard to remove.
- Flashy Clothing. Clothing with big logos isn’t seen much in Japan.
- Torn Jeans. You’ll rarely see ripped jeans in Japan. They do wear jeans but they’re usually straight-leg jeans, baggy jeans, or even a long denim skirt.
- Trendy Clothing or Extremely Bright Colors. Japanese love wearing neutral or pastel colors so you’ll rarely see bright colors being worn.
