What To Pack To Hawaii: The Essentials
1. Clothes
Hawaii is quite warm all year long so there’s no reason to bring any bulky clothes. There isn’t a strict dress code either but most people like to wear casual and clothes with beach vibes.
In the summertime, the temperatures can go up to 85°F and drops down to 70°F. For weather like this, I recommend wearing shorts and T-shirts or even sundresses.
In winter, it’s about 10 degrees lower. You can essentailly wear the same thing but layer on an additional light jacket to keep warm.
2. Shoes
If you plan to go hiking in Hawaii, it’s a must to bring comfortable sneakers. But if you plan on just lounging at the beach or going on casual strolls, then a pair of sandals or flip flops will be just fine.
3. Sunscreen
Choosing a mineral-based sunscreen that is reef-safe is super important for Hawaii. This way, it won’t cause coral bleaching. This means this type of sunscreen doesn’t have oxybenzone, octinoxate, and other various chemicals.
4. Backpack
The type of bag you choose to bring to Hawaii depends on how much stuff you need to carry. If you want to carry lightly, then I recommend wearing a belt bag around the body or waist. This can easily carry all the essentials like your passport, phone, and keys.
If you have a lot to carry including your laptop, then wearing a backpack is the best choice. Find a backpack that has comfortable straps so it doesn’t hurt your shoulders.
5. Water Bottle
Hawaii is a humid and hot place so it’s important to have a water bottle with you at all times. You could buy water but that will use up lots of excess plastic.
6. Beach Bag
When going to the beach, it’s best to bring a waterproof beach bag that can fit all the essentials like a beach towel, sunscreen, and other items.
7. Toiletries
Of course, remember to bring all your toiletries necessities like skincare, makeup, personal care items, and medication.
8. Snorkeling Gear
If you plan on snorkeling in Hawaii and don’t want to rent the gear, remember to pack your own snorkeling gear in your luggage!
What To NOT Bring to Hawaii
- Heavy Winter Clothing: Hawaii doesn’t get cold year-round so there’s no need to bring bulky winter clothing, It will take up unnecessary space in your luggage.
- Non-Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Hawaii bans the purchase of sunscreen with oxybenzone or octinoxate sold over the counter. Sunscreens with these ingredients can cause harm to the coral reefs so remember to choose a mineral-based sunscreen.
- Uncomfortable Shoes: Especially if you plan on walking a lot, don’t sacrifice comfort over style.
- Non-Waterproof Bags: When you’re going to the beach, it’s best to bring a waterproof bag to protect your belongings.

This means you can make a maximum of 8 different outfits, assuming you’re okay with reusing shirts and shorts.
